As winter weather settles in, we want to help you stay informed and prepared for the upcoming snowstorm expected to begin Saturday morning and continue through Sunday afternoon. Current forecasts predict 4–10 inches of snow, with the potential for ice in some areas.

🚜 Snow Removal Procedures in New Town

The City’s snow plowing teams are prepared to clear New Town’s streets as efficiently as possible. Please review the information below to understand what areas are maintained and how snow removal is prioritized.

Public Streets

  • All public streets in New Town® will be plowed by the City.

Regularly Plowed Alleys

The following alleys are typically included in snow removal operations:

  • North Canal Way Alley
    West of Canal St. between Hempstead St. & North New Town Ave.
  • South Canal Way Alley
    West of Canal St. between South New Town Ave. & Arpent St.
  • Hempstead Place Alley
    South of Hempstead St., west of Canal St.
  • Shutten Way Alley
    East of Shutten St. between Hempstead St. & Galt House Dr.
  • *Hempstead Way Alley

Additional Alleys

  • Snow removal in other alleys is determined by the snow operations management team, based on storm severity and only after all public streets and regularly plowed alleys have been cleared.

Private Streets (Not Plowed by the City)

  • The following private one-way streets are not maintained or plowed by the City:
    • Beach District (Berrang, Camp, & Wheelhouse)
    • Civic Circle
    • Civic Drive

🏠 Information for New Town Homes

Extreme cold temperatures can cause frozen or burst pipes. Homeowners and condo residents should take the following precautions to protect their property.

Preparation

  • Know the location of your water shut-off valve, commonly found near water heaters, utility closets, under sinks, or in garages.

When Temperatures Fall Below 20°F

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
  • Allow a slow trickle of hot and cold water to help prevent freezing.
  • Keep your thermostat set to at least 60°F. Do not turn it off.

If Pipes Freeze or Burst

  • Contact a trusted plumber immediately.
  • Be prepared to shut off your water supply if needed.
